Canine Diarrhea
Every pet owner should be familiar with canine diarrhea due to the fact that it is a common condition that most pets will face at least once. It is vital to know the cause and some of the different varieties of canine diarrhea.
Here are some cause and prevention methods:
1. Change of diet
Changing from a commercial dog food to various table scraps will likely produce canine diarrhea especially in puppies. A puppy's intestinal tract is sensitive and by changing from what he or she is used to eating to something brand new can cause severe diarrhea issues.
When changing from one type of diet to a different diet, insure the change is gradual. Start by slowly mixing the new food source with the old food source, and then gradually increase the amount until the old diet is replaced with the new diet.
Talk with your veterinarian as to a proper diet to feed a new puppy or even an older dog.
2. Change in drinking water.
When traveling, carry a supply of water with you. This will help in preventing canine diarrhea by allowing your pet to consume the same water he is used to drinking.
3. Excessive water consumption.
Severe medical conditions are usually present if your dog is drinking excessive water. A trip or consultation with your veterinarian should be done. During the heat of summer, pets will tend to overdo it and canine diarrhea can become an issue. Monitor your dog’s water intake during this time.
4. Over and Under Feeding.
Contrary to what most dog owners believe is the use of a self-feeder. If your dog is extremely hungry he or she is more apt to "force eat" instead of eating at a time when they feel they need to.
Evidence reveals that dogs are less subject to canine diarrhea when they are not feed their whole food amount at one feeding. Remember that only dry commercial food is used in this situation.
5. Spoiled food.
Dogs are by nature curious, and when faced with a tasty meal left to mold in a trash can they will take advantage of this free meal. Not only is the rotten and spoiled food an invitation for a severe case of canine diarrhea, the garbage can will also contain products that cause severe health problems.
6. Health Issues.
Heart, Kidney and Liver conditions, Distemper, Leptospirosis, and a variety of worms. Consult your vet for the proper vaccinations and routine health care.
7. Diet.
Uncooked egg whites and excessive lactose will cause canine diarrhea. Therefore, limit the amount of milk products.
8. Foreign matter.
Toys, wood splinters, lint and carpet strings, plastics and most all foreign objects can cause canine diarrhea. Not only the object itself, but the actual ingredients that are used to manufacture the item can be the cause.
Generally speaking, canine diarrhea should pass within several days. If not, consult your veterinarian, especially if your dog is vomiting or has any type of bloody stool.
To help alleviate some of the symptoms of canine diarrhea you can mix small amounts some cooked rice into his or her regular food.
